The citizens of Rockville are fortunate to live in a community where the arts are encouraged and supported. In the past 50 years, the level of facilities and services has continued to grow, both in number and quality. It is our hope that the pace of growth continue at least at the current rate. As it would have been difficult to predict the direction and scope of growth in the past 50 years, so it will be difficult to predict the direction and substance of growth for the next 50 years.
The stated purpose of the Rockville Chorus is “to provide an opportunity for adults to sing and perform together for the listening enjoyment of the community and for their own pleasure.” To help the chorus meet these needs the City of Rockville sponsors the Chorus and provides salaries for the Music Director and Accompanist, rehearsal and performance facilities, and music storage.
Using the past 50 years as a guideline, we know that many parts of the equation will change in ways we cannot foresee, for example the way music is produced, recorded, and where it is enjoyed have all changed drastically in the past 10-15 years. By the same token, there are some overall goals of City support and Chorus Mission that can and hopefully, will remain the same. The importance of public access, of taking performances out into the community, and the balance of music that provides both nostalgic remembrances mixed with works that challenge both the performer and the audience, are all constants.
Our vision thus can best be described as hope. The hope that the City of Rockville will maintain it’s level of support for the arts in the face of changing needs and ways of meeting those needs. The hope that the Rockville Chorus and it’s members can continue to provide both an opportunity for it’s members to participate in creating music in appropriate settings, as well as an opportunity for the public to enjoy access to hearing music, both familiar and challenging. And finally the hope that Rockville can take the lead in Montgomery County in access and opportunities in the arts. |
